Submental liposuction is a procedure that targets the area just below the chin (submental region). While there are many reasons it may be used, submental liposuction is commonly associated with the removal of jowls. Because of this, it is sometimes known as jowl liposuction.
Submental liposuction is also used to treat:
The procedure follows the same basic concept as traditional liposuction; incisions are made and fat is removed using a special tool known as a cannula. Where submental liposuction differs is in the use of smaller tools and incisions. Because the submental portion of the head is much smaller, less invasion is necessary to achieve the desired result.
During the actual procedure:
Submental liposuction typically takes just 30 minutes to complete and can be performed as an outpatient procedure. This means that the person receiving the surgery can return home the same day. Stitches will usually be removed around five days after treatment.
In the first few days after surgery, it’s important to avoid eating tough foods and participating in even light activity. Avoiding strenuous exercise and potentially harmful situations is recommended for several weeks. Full recovery most often occurs around four weeks after surgery.
